Party Walls

The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 defines the rights and responsibilities of owners of walls or boundaries that are shared, or that separate the buildings or land of different owners. It has arisen as a result of legislation over hundreds of years in order to provide a legal framework that enables owners to adapt party walls or boundaries in a way that reflects the shared interest both neighbours have; ensuring that any works are properly considered and executed in a properly agreed manner.

The law is designed to protect the interests of all owners of a wall or boundary by the involvement of objective building professionals.

By law, almost all building work to party walls requires certain legally binding Notices to be served and, in many cases, for Surveyors to be appointed to represent the interests of the various owners. We regularly act for owners in such matters and are experienced in this area of law.

If you are considering work or have received a Party Structure Notice we can advise you.
